Connecting with a Peer Support Group in Your Community

It takes time to adjust to using a wheelchair, no matter why you're using one.  Having a friend who has already rolled a mile in your shoes can help make the journey a little smoother.  That's why Wheel:Life encourages all of our readers to get involved in a peer support group in their local community.

Hop online to find a group of friends who use wheelchairs near you!

According to the National Spinal Cord Injury Association, "In a support group, members provide each other with various types of help for shared purposes. The help can take the form of providing and evaluating relevant information, relating personal experiences, listening to and accepting others’ experiences, educating and guiding, or for providing sympathetic understanding and establishing social networks. Support Groups may each have their own way of accomplishing their mission but all of them share the same goal of improving the lives of participants."  We agree!

PossAbilities is a FREE community outreach program developed by the Loma Linda University Medical Center East Campus (LLUMCEC). Its goal is to offer disabled individuals who were born with or have suffered a permanent physical injury a sense of community and provide activities and practical help to integrate them back into life-once again giving them opportunity for becoming valuable members of our communities. LLUMCEC recognizes that this disenfranchised population is often left without resources or support to deal with the many adjustments they must make physically, mentally, and emotionally in order to have fulfilling lives. Our mission is to provide new direction and hope through physical, social, educational, and spiritual interaction with peers and their community. This free membership program is tailored to persons with physical disabilities such as limb amputation, stroke, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, spina bifida, and others.

We are currently offering a six week SCI seminar free to community members. You can find out more details about this free seminar at www.teampossabilities.org

  1. This is wonderful information, thank you. It would be great if there were a searchable database by city.

    1. Hi Kathleen, thanks for your comment! We're going to try to list these by state as well. stay tuned, we're still compiling the list with reader suggestions before putting the state directory together.

      1. How about a category for those of us that do not have any of the listed problems above. We just don't have legs and use a wheelchair at least 90% or more of our time?

        1. Hi Russ, are you looking for an amputee support group? There are some listed within the results above, but we are going to be adding some resource pages by condition type soon that are organized by state. Thanks for your suggestion!

  2. It is an impressive list of resources as far as it goes. I would love to see a similar list for amputees who use chairs, either manual or power, both full and part time. Also a list for chair users for other reasons. Not all wheelchair users have easily defined reasons for using one, yet they face similar challenges in the world at large.

  3. very helpful. I jotted a few numbers for IL. I was wondering if anybody knew where I may get a wheelchair size 16. I am in need of one. i am undocumented so I don't really get help from the gov. anything would help thanks

  4. What a shame this valuable information is still not in a searchable format! I LOVE the wheel:life website, first time I've been here, seeking help for my 27-yo daughter. Thanks for all you do!

  5. Magee SCI Support Group meets the 2nd Thursday of the month at 6 pm at Magee Rehabilitation Hospital. The SCI Support Group provides opportunities for individuals with a Spinal Cord Injury as well as their family and friends to interact and relate on a level where everyone “gets it”. Through our discussions, resources are shared, support is given and a great camradery occurs. Pizza and desert is provided. Contact Marie Protesto at 215-587-3174 or peers@mageerehab.org

  6. sessions are led by trained facilitators and designed to foster peer support and to strengthen the capacity of communities to identify and develop their own solutions to health inequalities, including strategies to reform oppressive structures that contribute to such inequalities. The study was purposefully planned with rapid translation, dissemination, and sustainability in mind.
